camilla akersveen from norway exhibits her ‘taxi seat’ as part of ‘point of view‘ – a presentation of work by students of the oslo national academy of the arts – within the greenhouse venue of the 2011 stockholm furniture fair.

while growing up, akersveen spent a lot of time in her grandfather’s car, quickly becoming interested in his car seat that was dressed with a beaded seat cover, something she couldn’t keep her hands off of. the ‘taxi chair’ is based on this memory, functioning as a child-minder and playmate, but also as a piece of furniture for public or private spaces.

the seat is constructed from a metal frame in which strings of large wooden beads, varying in shape from spheres to cylinders, are strung across lengthwise forming the seat and back support for the piece. instead of covering the chair, the lines of beads become the actual seat itself.

‘I wanted to create a chair which could be used by all members of the family. focusing on play and the development of children’s senses, I chose to look back and find inspiration in my own childhood.’ – camilla akersveen
