benjamin hubert: crane for orsjo

'crane', designed by benjamin hubert for orsjo

created by british industrial designer benjamin hubert, 'crane' is an adjustable tabletop task lamp,
developed for swedish design and manufacturing company orsjo.
the piece is currently on display at the stockholm furniture fair 2011.

the horizontal arm can be rotated and adjusted in height

the perforated aluminum tube contains LED lights to provide illumination to the project at hand.
modeled after architectural cranes, simple lines and clamps compose the rest of the piece,
whose horizontal arm can be raised and lowered as well as rotated.

the lamps feature knurled detailing, in reference to orsjo's history of manufacturing and metalwork.

It's the same as "Cross" by Fontanaarte, 2005.

FontanaArte's Cross light looks like a bit like a lightsaber. Crane share's the same basic vertical and horizontal elements and cord location, but that's about it. Crane is pretty slick, though I was surprised to see led's used rather than a fluorescent tube.

this is much neater. All designs are "libri dai libri". That doesn't bother me. His product seems superior in quality so I give him credit for that .

saw this in stockholm...the light quality is not great and the form is a little soulless. sorry.

@ derek : For a fluo tube you need to house the (bulky) ballast somewhere close, plus you need to be able to change the tube. So LEDS are the right option. Probably won't be enough of a difference to avoid the writ from Fontana, tho…

I'm confused, how does light effectively escape the aluminium tube ? I get the whole surface treatment, it does add a bit of "zing" to the design, but doesn't it act as a light shade ?

For ambiant illumination it's all fine and dandy but how does one illuminate a desk when the source is obscured by perforated aluminium ?

Can anyone shed any light on this ?
