studio glithero: poured bar

aerial view of the 'poured bar' being flipped

london-based studio glithero (sarah van gameren and tim simpson) was commissioned by
the corinthia hotel, london to develop a temporary bar that would host several parties
including the bafta awards and events during london fashion week. the duo came up with 'poured bar',
consisting of layers of fast-hardening fluid, poured over a 6 metre long immaculate surface.
when the liquid becomes rigid, the poured slap is flipped, revealing the smooth plane of the first poured layers,
while also exposing the blobs, drips, puddles and runs from production, outlining the path of the gestures
in which it was made. the completed bar top is mounted to a wooden structure.

I like the sloppy approach of jersey seymour a lot better.
did similar stuff ages ago. this is too pretentious for something that has been done before...to clean for the subject

get a load of that video. how pretentious could you be. and deluded. its poured plastic for god sake, not the crown jewels!
i'll be at the other bar   03.08.11
The bar itself? Fun, but been done before.
The video? What a load of pretentious crap.

maybe you should get your design history straight and look up Gaetano Pesces weird rubber vases……the only thing thats different is its not rubber and not a vase
tnt   03.09.11
ah this is pretty wicked! being pretentious can produce pretty beautiful results.
ocelot   03.09.11
and....what now?
i would say that these people take themselves way too seriously...
dror   03.09.11
Agree with tnt. Gaetano Pesces series of 'melting' furniture was much, much more original. To pour something like that, they just need a warehouse. Not white, shiny beautiful space like on the video. Maybe they are using Daddy's money too to start with the business.

Can I have one?

Studio Glithero is known for their process work. If you look at any of their other projects, really, the finished product is secondary to what they do to get to the end point. This piece is obviously more about the performance of making it and so the well choreographed video fittingly highlights this. Nice work.

process is fine and emphasizing it is great, but ultimately you are left with a "thing" that either resonates and is something you want to keep around or be around or else it isn't and you want to get rid of it or not be around it

I think they managed to transcend it being merely process and imbue it with that resonance. In my mind, a lot of Pesce's work fails miserably in that respect.
dbkii   03.09.11
@dbkii, I agree with your evaluation but with regard to glithero vs pesce Im afraid I feel the exact opposite

Thanks SG Fan. What's with all the haters? So they decided to make the video artistic too. So what. I enjoyed it more than watching the process slopped around in a messy shop. Get over your cynicism and just enjoy it for what it is, a performance.

@ dror you are right.... WHAT IS THIS!!!! The Video is OK but still... WE ARE MAKING ART
