un design: UN01 iphone photography case
un design: UN01 iphone photography case

production mockup of the UN01 photography case
the iphone is a camera with the possibility of instant sharing across
multiple networks, with this in mind the california based brothers at
un design have developed a way to get it out of your pocket and in
front of you where it should be. the UN01 is a simple 2.5mm protective
plastic slide case with a neck strap that encourages the user to rotate
the phone into a landscape orientation and places it at chest level,
ready for use whenever needed.
to replicate the realism of using a camera, the body style and raised
lens design are inspired by point and shoot cameras. the case is a two
piece assembly that slides over the phone and is fastened secure by
a center locking ring.
kickstarter users should head over to their project page, pledges start at
30 USD for a white or black version. five more interchangeable colors are
planned on once the project is initially backed.

just finding an iphone and getting it ready to take a picture sometimes
can take too long or convince you that the photo opportunity just is no
longer worth the time and energy. this illustration captures the user's ability
to instantly have a conversation about what you are doing or end up just being
sad when you cannot share something you wanted to.

Fantastic effort, yet it does not provide anything other than encumbering the user with a bulky case.
The case must add something, it cannot solely be an illusion. What if the fake lens was actually a lens enhancer for the iphone? What if the lens could slide open, as on a point and shoot camera does, and then activated an app, allowing a picture to be taken within a couple seconds?
There needs to be a realistic assessment of the use otherwise it just becomes nice work for a graphic portfolio.

Ok, at first I was like what I don't get it, what does it do, only to realise - nothing. The comments supported what my view was but then I thought a little longer and harder about it and now I've decided it's actually kinda cool.
Imagine being at a music festival for example, I'd love to have my camera around my neck, it'd definitely encourage me to take more photos and not kick myself for having done otherwise.
Yes, there are phone lanyards and yes, I do have one BUT I don't like how much they fly and flip around. I'd feel a lot more confident wearing my phone around my neck having the phone sitting horizontal and with the cord fixed to each side rather than on one hook like a lanyard. This way you can just grab and snap instead of - as I do now - fumble around in my bag only to pick it up and work out what side's up/down whatever.
Then again there's still that inconvenience of switching the device on and opening the camera app up anyway... Oh well, verdict - not amazing but not worthy of the harsh criticism :)

I don't think it is useless, just over engineered and probably expensive.

Great stuff. If you can't see the value of this idea, you're just not worth of it. I wouldn't buy it buy I know a bunch of friends who would.
