'for the sake of form' the first solo exhibition of manhattan based product and furniture
design studio rich brilliant willing (theo richardson, charles brill, and alexander williams, RBW)
opens today at the volume gallery in chicago. drawing inspiration from the forms of air-shipping
containers, RBW has taken these icons of globalization and transposed them onto icons of the home:
the credenza, the coffee table, the bookshelf, side table and cabinet.

the volume gallery is an event-based gallery with a specific focus on emerging
contemporary american designers.

'11.6 ft³' made from cerused oak, powder-coated steel and bleached white oak
65 x 20 x 20 or 24 x 60 x 20 inches
edition of 12 + 2 artist's proofs

the process of abstracting the beveled edges, specifically used for fitting containers into round fuselages,
and translating the forms into brass, leather, and american hardwoods reveals what RBW
considers 'the transient idea of the contemporary home.'

'8.87 ft³' made from birch plywood, powder-coated steel and bleached white oak
36 x 40 x 16 or 44 x 30 x 16 inches

Do they break down or something, all the joints look like they are about to slip?
gimmy   03.18.11
actually rather refreshing
dbkii   03.18.11
refreshing, gives a little dynamic quality to normally banal furniture
ocelot   03.18.11
a bit star wars...
han solo   03.18.11
very nice! I agree with gimmy though, the joinery is looking shoddy. Not the finest craftsmanship.
DES   03.18.11
Banal. Sorry. Too much Rich, Willing and not enough "Brilliant". It's a reference to the feel of luxury airline travel? It's a DIY chamfered box. Boring.

bright side lights

design | 08.20.10

'bright side lights' personify a message of optimism through design and function. the cast glass pendants are durable, recyclable and can be used as a hanging pendant lamp, or laid on their sides as table lamps.
