konstantin grcic: waver for vitra

'waver' by konstantin grcic for vitra

in his first collaboration with vitra, konstantin grcic has created 'waver', a swivel chair
which embodies a new aesthetic, reinterpreting a classic type of furniture with sweeping
new dimensions and an unconventional lightness. on show at salone del mobile 2011,
the chair looks to deliberately devoid itself of conventional typologies, implementing
instead commonalities of lightweight, high performance sports equipment.

a fabric-spanned seat sits suspended inside a shaped tubular steel frame. designed to offer
the flexibility of a cantilever chair, the piece uses simple technical construction that supports
the body while allowing for a wide range of motion. colorful and contrasting fabrics made
from waterproof materials clearly emphasis connecting and functional elements, highlighting
the contours of the object and supplying the pieces with a sporty aesthetic.

Reminds me of a chair from 'Sky Mall'

Crazy what these star designers can do
Dust   04.13.11
cool concept. But I wonder if the fabric is strong enough to hold a heavy person.
leowmc   04.13.11
...different, indeed.
goes with the "wink"-chair by cassina.
not my taste though.

80's are here...
EHV   04.13.11
That just looks SO comfy! For me, Konstantin Grcic always digs that bit deeper than most (except for the 360 office chair thingy...). I think this is just great, and moves things on a step further... which is much more than most current 'designers' seem able to do. BRAVO!

It is very 80s indeed,

Google Paolo Deganello, he could have done this , same design language

Love the table lamp!
Walter Winfield   04.16.11
The perfect chair for fishing or camping.

why did designboom removed some comments from here?! like the one that the chair looks like it might be ikea design!!!! is that an obscene comment for someone, for designers...
imm   04.18.11
imm,
one of our editors may have removed the comment because it sounds from your description
like it was intended as a generic negative response to the pieces,
but without offering anything constructive to the discussion.
designboom   04.18.11
Ikea is not a negative or obscene word, as far as I know.
IKEA is a great company, renovned for its success in a field of afordable and modern design in furniture industry. And if comparing this Vitra chair with Ikea, it was just to say that maybe this chair design looks more like Ikea designed product than Vitra's.
Could not comment much more then on estehtics of the chair (what you did as well, by the way), aybe because, it was not possible to try it in Milan furniture fair to try its comfort, technically it is not very inovative, from what we read here in your article, and there is no indication of the price.

Please have a policy for the comments, but reasonable one.

Are the following comments from this article more constructive:
"Reminds me of a chair from 'Sky Mall'

Dust 04.13.11

"80's are here..."
EHV 04.13.11

This chair looks like it is done for I.K.E.A. - like it!!!

imm,
there is no scientific comment policy. reading through the comments, one of our editors interpreted it as negative and not productive. had the comment been elaborated upon as you now have, we would of course have left it.

these decisions are necessarily subjective, but we do understand your reasoning and duly apologize. our ultimate goal is just to facilitate a constructive discussion on the works we present.

just for the record though, if there start being too many IKEA comments from here on out, some of them might have to go! :)
