piet hein eek: tube chairs

'tube bench' by piet hein eek

the 'tube chair' by dutch designer piet hein eek is made of old pipes that were salvaged from the building
his studio bought and renovated last year. a large number of pipes were found during the renovation,
either used structurally or internally within the architecture of the space. during their reconstruction,
despite the huge number of the industrial pipes they had to discard, the studio also managed to save a large quantity.
these salvaged pieces have been used to create a range of furniture objects, the first being a 'pipe bar' for the
restaurant that has been built within. this initial project has now been followed by the design of an armchair,
bar chairs, small tables and the pipe bench, with intentions of incorporating the industrial material into other objects.
the models are numbered consecutively by name (i.e. chair no. 1, bench no. 2, and so on).
the collection of 'tube' furniture is on show at spazio rossana orlanda during milan design week 2011.

So your point is that this design already exists? Thats a bit thin imo. Im sure colombo wasnt the first either. Like designboom competitions state: its not the idea but how the idea is executed. PHE works from materials to create logical and simple products, this is a good example of it.
It's that it it's a 40year-old existing idea and it's solved SO much better than this one.
best regards
super beautiful
That then will be 8000,- Euro's please!
Thank you Designboom for bringing this to us.
The works of Piet Hein Eek cost 50 euro an hour. If a product is over-priced, he knows they worked too long on it. Simplicity pays off. In this case, it'll be relatively cheap for its size.
tube chair 2
I made these chairs from scrap stainless steel sourced from reclamation yards around my studio in London bridge, in 2006.
I think its impossible not to draw comparisons between designers work, and in turn difficult for a designer not to be inspired, consciously or unconsciously by everything they see.

Isn't it heavy?
the same quantity of material, used in other conditions, should result in a large amount of chairs or benches, for a more sustainable design...
