italian studio spalvieri + del ciotto's 'sacchetto', on display at the salone satellite during milan design week 2011,
is an armchair created from a study they are conducting on the use of Tyvek® for interior design solutions.
Tyvek® is a non-woven high-density polyethylene (HDPE) which is water-proof and extremely resistant to UV light,
typically used in the construction of buildings. its appearance is quite similar to paper, atoxic, chemically inert
and does not contain a binder. the studio devised an innovative method in order to join pieces of material without using glue
or sewing where sheets are soldered through an ultrasonic technique, and rendering the joints water-proof.

'in this way we could create an unbelievably resistant armchair, ideal for indoors or outdoors, which maintains the delicate
and frail look of paper. you are able to sit in the yard on an armchair seemingly made of paper, but durable enough to be
cleaned with a wet sponge
.'

a sad example that the designers didn`t accomplish to integrate an innovative material (which is anyway nothing else than a rather durable plastic fabric) and this particular sewing technology (which is nothing special anymore in plastic and automotive industry) into a design proposal which opens up questions and new ways how to use high tech materials. instead they put an ordinary upholstered mass into this fabric and closed it similar to a paper bag. where is the beauty, where is the aesthetics and where is the intellectual approach in this work ? never seen any worse than this project. sorry to say so, good luck !

gorgeous!

This reminds me of Tord Boontje and Artecnica lights, but so much less imaginative.... sorry, but can we get a little more creative?

A gigantic paper bag, that actually has humor in it! I would prefer this over the other hundreds of sheik new designer chairs out there. This is rad. Keep up the material exploration, interested to see what you do next!
