philippe starck: lou read for driade

french designer philippe starck has created an armchair with an organic, anthropomorphic outline.
the 'lou read' armchair is part of a collection for paris's royal monceau hotel, recently refurbished by starck,
where it is placed in every room. 15 years ago, starck met lou reed in this hotel.

'lou reed is (-- my friend --) a musician and a writer. this project is a reminder that it is far better to spend time in conversation
or reading activities than in front of the TV or computer'
.
says philippe stark in an interview with designboom.

developed for italian furniture company driade, 'lou read' is conceived with leather directly fixed onto a fiberglass skeleton,
with a high neck and short arms, giving the chair a throne-like quality.

Looks old.. a delay of 50 years
mandril   04.25.11
ahhhhhm @mandril, i think that might be the point:
"the chair looks like a tribute to 50's danish design."
evan   04.25.11
what a beautiful and powerful line! really starck! i love it!
zeronergy   04.26.11
A classic
BorMad   04.26.11
Leather clad legs are a bit obscene, but I like them
oskarludwig   04.26.11
looks like an armchair of the villain in a movie. the surface-flow from the seat to the frontlegs is not solved properly, imo. otherwise: why not? opinions differ, as always...
oliver   04.26.11
all that because it is THE BIG (old fashioned) STARCK?
gomez   04.27.11
using the design of the moose´s antlers for a chair form can be interesting and asthetic. but not in this case.
lohmann   04.27.11
YES, all because he is the big, old fashioned Starck!
Who cares about your or my opinions...
ramon   04.28.11
ramon and gomez,
we deleted a few of your posts in which you were saying that
this chair is not good (in a not very educated manner) and that there is
no free speech on db and so on ...
this comment area is ideally for developed thoughts,
and less for a list of similar, bold expressions of 'I don't like'.
opinions are interesting if they are curious, personal
and not offensive. boring hate has to go.
designboom   04.28.11
Starck preaches about renewable materials and thinking of the resources for the future and then designs this in fiberglass and glued leather.
Also the high neck and seat limit the size of the user. The armrests seem too thin to be useful or comfortable for a long period of time.
Superflous.
