'nesting pc virtual tablet' by sono mocci

a concept by japanese-born, italy-based designer sono mocci, 'nesting pc virtual tablet' is a combination tablet and data visualization
interface with automatic battery charging and data syncing. phones, memory cards, CDs, USB ports, and I/O cables can be plugged
directly into the device, where they will show up as images on the touchscreen for easy manipulation and access. the design was shortlisted
from over 1000 concepts in our recent designboom competition 'a life with future computing', organized in collaboration with FUJITSU.

the 13-inch concept tablet features a dedicated dock for mobile phones. when inserted, a visualization of the phone onscreen
works in the same manner as would the device itself, permitting dialing, calling, texting, and other use. the loading of disk media
or flash drives offers a similar intuitive functionality. integrated charging eliminates the need for AC or outlet-specific adapters
for these kinds of devices.

in the words of the designer:
'today we have various types of computer interfaces, so the project [uses their] valuable functions but integrates their meaning.
it is a visualization of your intuition, an interface on an interface, a nesting structure of digital vision.

Very soon, physical data storage medium will be obsolete. Thanks to cloud technologies like Dropbox, Gmail, and MobileMe, people don't use USB Drives. Netflix and iTunes means DVD and BD are obsolete as well.

Interesting concept, but obsolete world view.

amazing concept!

Sorry Paul, you're a bit too optimistic there. While those services are great and offer fantastic value, I do not believe they will make physical storage obsolete. The level of control over cloud-based storage is minimal, security questionable. Your modern young user will change perhaps, but physical storage will continue to thrive for secure data storage, backups etc. and that is even ignoring the fact that most people in the world are not even close to using the tech available - any idea how many people with computers haven't even got Win XP yet? just a hint.

fantastic concept, i just wonder if this can be used with any phone/smartphone? could potentially make for a lush media centre too, if equipped with a bluray-drive and hdmi-connectivity!

If physical medium is important to people, why is iPad the best selling tablet ever? Windows tablets from 10 years ago have more ports and sd slots than iPad, yet they failed. iPad only has headphone and 30pin connector. Over 5 million people would disagree with you :)

In terms of security, my hard drive has died twice and I have lost SD cards and USB drives with data in them. Dropbox has never failed. You're the kind of person who drives 10+ hours because of terrorism. More people die from car accidents than public transportation.

This concept is a gimmick built on top of old thinking.

One kind of mobile flame between physical and virtual. concept of Nesting pc
makes me remember story of the inception movie. someone dreams in another dream.
Physical existence of the mobilephone melts in new style PC tablet.
