sebastian errazuriz: magistral cabinet

'magistral cabinet' by sebastian errazuriz

the 80,000 bamboo skewers that cover new york-based artist and designer sebastian errazuriz's 'magistral cabinet',
act as a protective armor, safely holding one's personal belongings within. the doors and openings
within the storage unit are concealed, and can be slid open to reveal its inner mechanisms.

over the span of 6 weeks, 12 woodworkers engaged in an obsessive and labor intensive process to construct the
furniture object. each skewer was individually hammered into the previously carved wooden structure.
the cabinet's imposing presence, invites viewers to get lost in the thousands of points.

the piece is currently on show as part of errazuriz's solo exhibition 'beautiful premonitions'
on show at cristina grajales gallery.

I want my HOUSE that way !!!

I see this featured in a mystery novel, when the heroine saves herself and shoves the bad guy to his death by impaling him with the cabinetry. ...Oh, I suppose she'll need to sharpen all those skewers a bit first.

beauty but did u notice how u can clean it????!
faeze   05.11.11
it's an incredible piece of work, and it looks amazing, but i just don't understand why one would want to spend so much time doing something that close to Heatherwick. Just smaller.
The way it opens is interesting though.
franke   05.11.11
nobody thought of how difficult it would be clean?
it's ugly and have useless volume for storage like entire object too
diego   05.11.11
Clean? Vacuumer, anyone?
dusty   05.11.11
Amazing! love it... if you have the money to buy it, you have the money to clean it
Alessandro   05.11.11
I love the agressiveness of the piece. Heatherwick is clearly a reference, just as the work of the artist Jesus Soto may be a reference for heatherwick... The context, scale and function is completely different.
paul   05.12.11
Unique, sensational, surprising.
Carlos U. Pozzobon   05.12.11
It does not seem very innovative, just look at the UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2000.
rui   05.12.11
No Soto, Heaterwick or whatever, its Craig from Slipknot!
Leon   05.12.11
stolen from heatherwick. pathetic
stealer   05.12.11
he is soo cute

Why is there always this continued, non-purposeful discussion of something being copied from something else? I like it. The hidden compartments, a simple material having this amount of visual impact… Heatherwick's pavilion is beautiful, but so is this.

Seems more like Errazuriz likes porcupines:

Beth   05.12.11
Beautiful! and I love that it continues the work Sebastian Errazuriz has done with the hundreds of wooden spikes used in Porcupine Cabinet and the Piano Shelf.
Jane   05.12.11
there's nothing more frustrating than to create something, say...a pavilion, and to find people copying your work in such a blunt and dull way. But the most tragic and frustrating part of it is when others, even aware of the rip-off, are still applauding: beautifull!!!
sjors   05.16.11
this is a thing of beauty, it looks so tactile, would love to touch it.
much better than a pavillion, its at a scale that can be accessed, i dont care if it references other objects it is still beautiful
terry too right   05.16.11
UK pavillion?! Seed cathedral from heatherwick?
