'doveline' designed by mark & philosophy

designers' own words:
after collecting a great amount of market research on drawing tools and their users, we (mark & philosophy) found that
drafting tools are often error-prone and have a short in lifespan. we believe the solution to these problems can be found in tools
based around an ideal of tradition, ease of use, and craft. our product, the 'doveline', combines several problematic tools into a
single high quality instrument. we conducted a series of tests with various circle-making devices on the market. all of the tests
resulted in strained hands, awkward motions, and inconsistent circles. we asked ourselves,
'how could we improve the experience of this simple task?'. through various sketches and iterations, we determined our product’s form,
identity, and packaging. we wanted to create a product with materials that would be matched by its thoroughness in design –
something useful enough, simple enough, and precise enough that it would travel with the user throughout his/her career.
to achieve this we devised a system based around a straight-edge and a dovetail track, which easily holds interchangeable attachments.
the 'doveline' set includes four tool attachments: center-point, scribe tip, lead holder, and blade.

looks nice,
but misses the point of being a "drawing equipment" in almost every possible way.

Drawing is not just about circles, and i can not see anything in that set that is not made for being used to draw circles.

another Major flaw is the fact that the Straightedge has no marks whatsoever; it looks nice but is absolutely unpractical i f you have to draw a circle with exactly 4.6 cm radius.

A high quality quill would be desirable, as i wish (call me silly) to write or draw lines and so on and not only circles.

overall:
nice design and idea, but needs improvement.
still i would prefer a set of high quality quills and a good pair of compasses, as the circle diameter can not be smaller than the distance between the two dovetrail-things.

so.. it's just a drawing compass and even worse takes 5 minutes to get it together before i can use it??

i'm pretty sure you're missing the point.
it's meant to make you think about a tool as art in itself, not a new or faster way to draw.

In this world of fast track culture, we should appreciate the tradition of tools and hand made items that allow us to appreciate art of an objects. This is a tool that you want to keep and enjoy the moments to assemble a tool. It is not a disposable item. It is sustainability that pulls you to appreciate this object.

I understand that this is probably the circle edition of this platform and find that using a dovetail as the main sliding mechanism is a smart choice.

Lazar engraved marks for measurement would be nice but seeing this is an advance prototype/concept I hope you will put it on the next stage of development.

Nice design, and beautiful images
