knot by john caswell - hands on door handles shortlist

knot handle

'knot door handle' by john caswell from UK is one of the shortlisted entries from our recent designboom
competition 'hands on door handles' organized by designboom in collaboration with COLOMBO design.
the door handle contest
yielded entries from more than 6, 000 participants and has been juried by
UK designer jasper morrison and US-based reiser and umemoto architects.

material variations

'after experimenting by knotting cord, I noticed that a simple overhand knot forms a perfect 90 degree junction.
I used this simple junction as the main focus of my handle design.
the final handle is designed to look as if it has been impossibly formed by knotting a metal bar.

technical specification

knots have been the subject of interest for their ancient origins, it is a seemingly esoteric subject. consider their common uses,
and the area of mathematics. but it does not take a mathematician to enjoy this door handle, ...
there have been many submissions with a similar intervention, we examined all the variations and this door handle has been
selected because of its more precise formal approach: the knot is simple, but deemed to be aesthetic on the grounds of 'symmetry' and 'balance'.

The knot door handle is a really neat design. I've seen it before at a design show in NY last year and thought it was an interesting look for a door handle. It might be cool to have the whole knot motif in the house, on cabinets, everything. Would be great to go to this in Milan if I was there! Anything coming to the States like this show soon?
Sarah Harris   05.27.11
Ahoy! Finally thar be a door pull good enough for a Pirate.
Jack   05.27.11
can't fight my impression. thought about it. seriously. too FAT for everyday-life.

maybe if the tube would decrease in the knot. no proper english here...
argh   05.28.11
Poetic. Well done.
Andrés   05.28.11
Can't imagine how this will be manufactured in production quantities. Could this be done in casting?
Prashant Chandra   05.28.11
i think not, not for me anyway; but for others, why not? sorry :-)

I thought about this design when working on my project for this competition, but I abandoned it because it already existed and wasn't a new idea...
Now I find it here...
Astonished

@maestroosram - thats because the jury said "whatever" to this contest
scary children   05.29.11
my dead wife could have designed something better and my dead wife didn’t know much about design, now she don’t know much about anything; jasper morrison must be getting old, he is going from design towards styling, dieter rams will be disappointed in him
scary children   05.29.11
that is not the modern contemporary look that i thought they are looking for! it does not answer in any matter to the brief they were given to us! I am very disappointed to have thrown away my not very free time!
ME   05.30.11
Original my a**!
Leo   05.30.11
pffff! I hope they (the jury) prefere sth more creative there. Though maybe the Colombo will like such easy to produce design.
Don   05.30.11
sorry but I thought it was a seriously contest. This was an industrial design contest, not an art one.
pepe   05.30.11
Like Chandra mentioned before, it can not be casted in metal (not in a 2 part mould, nor in a 3 or 4 or... part mould).
It can be moulded in a kind of plastic in a silicone mould, but then you'll have to reinforce the inside structure with some metal to deal with the forces employed while using.
How are you going to do that ?

Like a wise person once said
"please don't send in vague concepts, but go a step further"
Critic   05.30.11
dear readers,
thank you for your discussion and comments.

we completely agree with you about the complexity of producing such a design.

'knot' has been selected as one of 165 shortlisted entries overall.
it was chosen from the 'freestyle' category of the 'hands on door handles' competition
where we asked participants for more 'experimental designs' which still managed to follow the
few technical guidelines provided.

we have chosen to feature it as there were more than 20 designs that exhibited
a similar concept and wanted to show the popularity of this theme throughout.

love it!
