'renault eleve,' redesign concept by allen zadeh
american designer allen zadeh has created 'renault eleve' as a redesign concept for the renault 4. while capturing the vehicle's iconic style,
this model converts it into a versatile cabrio with multiple possible configurations, introducing interactivity to appeal to a younger demographic.
the concept is one of fifty projects shortlisted from over 3200 designs from 92 countries in designboom's recent RENAULT 4 EVER competition,
which asked participants to redesign the renault 4 with an eye towards historical lineage, contemporary aesthetics, and sustainable design.
named after the french word for 'student', 'eleve' is designed for flexibility, featuring exchangeable exterior panels and an easily modifiable
construction. making use of technological and ecological innovations, the vehicle's exterior panels are made of natural composites,
and all interior parts are likewise made out of recycled textiles.

submitted to the competition and extends sincere thanks to all of its participants. the jury has still not made its final decision on the winning entry,
but the results will be published to designboom at the end of july.

Why is db deleting comments regarding the R4 competition? Diversity of opinion has made this forum great and censoring it only limits the participating designer's ability to gain insight that only constructive criticism can provide. As designers we cannot just welcome the pat-on-the-back comments but we should also be open to listen to those who may uncover flaws on our ideas, thus, enabling the designer to re-evaluate a proposal and refine it. Design is a collaborative process, we design for the world at large not just for other designers or ourselves otherwise it would be fine arts.

The work is painstaking and very faithful to the iconic R4L, but one can dare more futuristic style and less "retrô" , without losing the DNA. In a time when the trend is quite futuristic, mainly because of the introduction of the electric car on the market, I imagine that the winning design will tend more to the brand new Frendzy than for the Eleve 4.

I like some of the practical ideas of this entry, the removable roof is great, the interior is smart and the exterior has some neat touches.
The proportions are way off, which makes it look weird and lacks elegance, especially in the back.
But like in the first shortlisted shown yesterday, the quality is poor in terms of presentation and modelling.
Still, a good work and congrats on the entry, althougth, I´m still disappointed on the quality presented so far.

I don't see much structural evidence of modern safety features which are essential for legal approval in most countries and cannot be overlooked even in the design concept phase because they are so fundamental. Does the design have crumple zones fore and aft, offset frontal collision counter measures, resistance to side collisions, rollover protection, etc.

As also described i missed the totaly new view of the things and the theoretical practical transformation. The engine seems to be not a theme - and that when the circularsystem was the total theme for all. For me, it seems that only the optic and the rendering is interesting and not new ideas behind the project. Sorry, but i´am angry about that... only optic, no new ideas.

Im disappointed in the entries shown so far because im seeing the R4 rehashed rather than the spirit captured into a new design. If the cars are so similar to the original, why not just restart production? In this entry the interior doesnt blend with the exterior and the proportions give one an unsteady feeling like the front is about to separate from the rear.

My favorite!! Being French and having seen Renault 4 all my life, this car really looks like something I would see in the street today. Looks stylish!! and captures the original 4L looks= I want one!
