r4 rally by yann terrer + jerome garzon - renault 4 ever shortlisted entry
'r4 rally,' renault redesign concept by yann terrer and jérôme garzon
'r4 rally' is a concept car by parisian designers yann terrer of tylt design and jérôme garzon of machin machin. focusing on the energy cycle,
this proposed redesign is a solar-powered vehicle which integrates nanotechnology with environmentally friendly materials. based on the iconic
outlines of the renault 4, 'r4 rally' adds sustainable factors to improve efficiency during the car's manufacture as well as its use. the concept is one
of fifty projects shortlisted from over 3200 submissions from 92 countries in designboom's recent RENAULT 4 EVER competition,
which asked participants to redesign the renault 4 with an eye towards historical lineage, contemporary aesthetics, and sustainable design.
made of stretched textiles on a tubular structure, the body uses considerably less energy during production than a conventional one made of steel.
the doors are also open structures that require less material for manufacture. using nanotechnology, this body fabric allows solar energy to be
absorbed and harnessed; the glass window surfaces are likewise converted into solar panels. having observed that the majority of a car's life
is spent unused and immobile, 'r4 rally' gives parked cars the new function of generating electricity--for both its own battery and general domestic use.

renault is proud of the results of the RENAULT 4 EVER competition and extends sincere thanks to all of its participants.
the jury has still not made its final decision on the winning entry, but the results will be published to designboom at the end of july.
Does it have to mimic the beloved Renault 4? Of course not. I'd get a Dymaxion.
I was not sure of the first 2 entries revealed, but the last 2 projects and in particular this r4 rally are so beautiful,
resolved under every single aspect.
designboom respect,
good job yann + jérôme
probably the most amazing presentation I have ever seen.
Plus the proportions are exactly similar to the original 4L.
I think the only drawback is the overall look, I think the project could remind us of the 4L instead of being a copy with new materials/ideas and design touches, to me it´s too similar to the original.
The rest is just awesome, great work.
This time i´m not disappointed. :)
sure there are many things of critique for this one, but they get balanced out by the many plusses this one have.
what i do feel though is that thís design in particular, is more fitting to be a concept car... of a renault 4 that would already be in production... not one to be the main new model.
anyway... I love this competition and seeing everybodys work because i used to drive a renault 4 haha.
what I am kind of missing so far, is designers investigations in the current renault model series, or it's not very appearent. for example making use of the base of the Twingo or clio for this new 4, to lower development costs and stuff alike. Other than the renault logo some more family resemblence etcetera.
one comment to the commenters who comment on all these boxy designs...have you even looked to the current cars on the streets? the kia soul, the nissan cube ring a bell?
One thing bothers me though about all entries so far: Safety.
Sure, the car is made of stretchy materials and such, but collisions would hardly be just bounces. If one bouncy car hits another bouncy car at a speed of 80km/h, an airbag would be useful. Well if the car doesn't bounce of a cliff that is.
You notice I am very concerned about safety, but the design is wonderful.
Best wishes for the contest :D
