r4 rally by yann terrer + jerome garzon - renault 4 ever shortlisted entry

'r4 rally,' renault redesign concept by yann terrer and jérôme garzon

'r4 rally' is a concept car by parisian designers yann terrer of tylt design and jérôme garzon of machin machin. focusing on the energy cycle,
this proposed redesign is a solar-powered vehicle which integrates nanotechnology with environmentally friendly materials. based on the iconic
outlines of the renault 4, 'r4 rally' adds sustainable factors to improve efficiency during the car's manufacture as well as its use. the concept is one
of fifty projects shortlisted from over 3200 submissions from 92 countries in designboom's recent RENAULT 4 EVER competition,
which asked participants to redesign the renault 4 with an eye towards historical lineage, contemporary aesthetics, and sustainable design.

made of stretched textiles on a tubular structure, the body uses considerably less energy during production than a conventional one made of steel.
the doors are also open structures that require less material for manufacture. using nanotechnology, this body fabric allows solar energy to be
absorbed and harnessed; the glass window surfaces are likewise converted into solar panels. having observed that the majority of a car's life
is spent unused and immobile, 'r4 rally' gives parked cars the new function of generating electricity--for both its own battery and general domestic use.

Visually arresting, love the new ideas and mould-breaking but as a practical matter involving millions of these, im bothered somehow and have to say no.

Best idea yet -- a car made of stretch, photovoltaic fabric. If all other cars are similarly made, safety risks almost vanish. Collisions would be bounces, like beach balls or men on the moon. And it generates electricity whenever the sun shines. Imagine a mall parking lot full of little solar generators selling their power to the mall. When you buy something, the energy you've added makes your bill smaller.

Does it have to mimic the beloved Renault 4? Of course not. I'd get a Dymaxion.

The proportions feel good but It's too bad that aesthetically is so similar to the original since there are a lot of innovative ideas on this one, this presentation is awesome. The interior is very promising especially the instrument panel, my only concern is on the seats, they feel flimsy for a car but are quite good looking. This one is a solid idea, great job!

I have to admit that this competition is outstanding,
I was not sure of the first 2 entries revealed, but the last 2 projects and in particular this r4 rally are so beautiful,
resolved under every single aspect.
designboom respect,
good job yann + jérôme
probably the most amazing presentation I have ever seen.

Now we are talking, this is the level of presentation and design resolution one would expect of such competition. Flawless presentation, solid development of the idea and a resolved design. I would position the rear view mirror in a more conventional location for practical purposes but this is an awesome project

Nice presentation and great idea using fabric skin but not new (google Velorex, and the winking BMW).I like the way the ribs in the bonnet echo the original 4L's bonnet. Unfortunately not all other cars are similarly made and the car still needs to protects its occupants who are not made of rubber. The supporting frame shows little structural thought. I realize concepts need freedom to explore new ideas. But just how free? Perhaps competition briefs need to be less vague? Oh, and if you're selling power to the mall I guess that means free parking?
David   07.15.11
Great presentation and nice use of materials. But unfortunately this competition seems to be only about 3D .
Plus the proportions are exactly similar to the original 4L.

awesome!
alicia   07.15.11
Great presentation and good ideas too!!! The build is technically correct and the proportions too. The aesthetical design could be brought closer to today's cars though and for me, a fabric covered car is still too flimsy for the world we live in today. Love the dashboard, compact, elegant and functional. Good luck Yann and Jérôme!

Very nice project, solid on ideas and solid on the presentation.

I think the only drawback is the overall look, I think the project could remind us of the 4L instead of being a copy with new materials/ideas and design touches, to me it´s too similar to the original.

The rest is just awesome, great work.

This time i´m not disappointed. :)
What?   07.15.11
another cool one. definitely also one to be shortlisted. This is what concept design is all about in my opinion. if you look at car concepts of the past that are revealed on motorshows...you wonder how they would ever see the time of day. It's all about ideas and concept studies. They don't háve to be able to roll out of the factory as is.

sure there are many things of critique for this one, but they get balanced out by the many plusses this one have.

what i do feel though is that thís design in particular, is more fitting to be a concept car... of a renault 4 that would already be in production... not one to be the main new model.

anyway... I love this competition and seeing everybodys work because i used to drive a renault 4 haha.

what I am kind of missing so far, is designers investigations in the current renault model series, or it's not very appearent. for example making use of the base of the Twingo or clio for this new 4, to lower development costs and stuff alike. Other than the renault logo some more family resemblence etcetera.

one comment to the commenters who comment on all these boxy designs...have you even looked to the current cars on the streets? the kia soul, the nissan cube ring a bell?
bedo   07.15.11
Great. Really really great. As mentioned, the presentation is well done.
One thing bothers me though about all entries so far: Safety.
Sure, the car is made of stretchy materials and such, but collisions would hardly be just bounces. If one bouncy car hits another bouncy car at a speed of 80km/h, an airbag would be useful. Well if the car doesn't bounce of a cliff that is.
You notice I am very concerned about safety, but the design is wonderful.
Best wishes for the contest :D

Although a good rendering work, it is just a visionary chassis, under a beach tuned R4L body, of the '60s, possibly used only at balnearies at the south of equator line, never in a desert.
Sergius   07.15.11
Never, ever have I dreamed of a car - this would be a first. Everything is in there: beauty, lightness, eco-friendliness. What else? Congrats in a bunch!
