sebastian pablo salanova: r4 people - renault 4 ever shortlisted entry

'r4 people', renault redesign concept by sebastian pablo salanova

'r4 people' is a concept car by argentinan designer sebastian pablo salanova which aims to integrate the essence of renault's original design
with sustainable economy. with the premise of creating an inclusive and accessible vehicle, this proposal includes both hatchback and van
styles that can be used in diverse contexts. the concept is one of fifty projects shortlisted from over 3200 submissions from 92 countries in
designboom's recent RENAULT 4 EVER competition, which asked participants to redesign the renault 4 with an eye towards historical
lineage, contemporary aesthetics, and sustainable design.

the look of 'r4 people' maintains the simplicity of its ancestor but addresses modern environmental concerns: to minimize long-range
ecological impact, the five-door hatchback and two-door van are both powered by engines with an electric lithium battery. seats are given
extra functionality with a hollow structure for storage, and floor coverings are created from natural fibers. plastic components are likewise
formed with recycled materials, and the body and side molding are made from aluminum. lastly, the exterior features LED front and rear lights.

Now when I see that I can't believer I praised the previous entries. This is just awesome.
benni   07.20.11
Like it. Finally something fresh and free from the original 4L rigidity. I like the rear lights and the way he cought the character in the side view. But as I have stressed before, as soon as you get free from the 4L 'box', you lose a lot of character, and that is what happened to the front; it got too japanese car, of the '90s, got too toylike while the 4L has a distinctive, bold character.
m25   07.20.11
what is a five speed manual gearbox doing into an electric car?
boris   07.20.11
What's going on here? this one of 50 finalist?
very low standard. looks like Tata Nano!!!
alex   07.20.11
mm???
Sati   07.20.11
what's with the crazy headlights, it look like it's on drugs
yury   07.20.11
It has the face of a Renault Twingo. Toycar, but it's not that bad. I'm even concidering to like it...
jazzisnice   07.20.11
Well, nice effort, but too toy japanese 90īs concept car...

And the standart is quite low for such a competition, no offense to the creator.
What?   07.20.11
I was wondering when a "happy grille" would come along and here it comes. Sorry this does nothing for me but yes, maybe Tata would be interested.
charles   07.20.11
Molto originale, creativitā al 100%...
msrusc   07.20.11
A strong personality on traces, indicating creative freedom and solid knowledge of cars.
Creases striking that confer robustness, wisely tempered by large curves and rounded edges, very appropriate for a multi-purpose model, as the Renault R4L.
I think that familiarity with the japanese style or toylike athmosphere, as was been wisely observed in one of the comments, reverts positively to the versatile use of the car, bringing relaxation, making it look smooth and inviting to use, even by the fact of well combining with compact models .
I believe that, as a utility, Pablo Sebastian might suggest a hybrid powertrain, which reduces the size of the batteries and give more autonomy to its well-made concept.
Sergius   07.20.11
Funny veichle! Not bad at all..
patrick riva   07.20.11
OK, but not as delightful as some of the others.
I agree with "What?". My first thought was Japanese design from 20 years ago.
Marc D.   07.20.11
Not so bad!!
You seems to be a very young designer but there is alot of ideas on the shape it's not just a copy of the old one.
Be careful with what you writte or think: why do an electric car would have a gearbox? why is there a transmition? its an electric car put 2 or 4 electric engines, 1 on each weel (with 4 you'll get a 4 weels drive car and it'll takes less place)

Gratz for your project and continu in that way.
Me :D   07.20.11
The contest is over, this is the winner for sure! Amazing re-design of the R4.

Much better than the new beetle or the Mini.
george best   07.20.11
Excellent design. The best up to now!
Marcos   07.20.11
It has Tata written all over it
Yuck   07.20.11

This must be the best design that I've seen-

thdudesign   07.20.11
i like this! Finally a short listed design that's actually fun and cool!

I like it even more because it hasn't just been whacked up in alias and rendered, you can actually see the design and the renault dna. Yeh okay its a little Tata, but at least its not a flippin box like the rest of the entries so far with a fancy grill.

You can tell you're a newbie or a young designer but well done, a good entry and you managed to bring the car to life too!
nd   07.21.11
orrible...
simsalabim   07.21.11
jejejeje i wish see the design of the people with negative comments, one head is one world and there are many heads with different ideas....i only have this curiosity for see that design coming from people posting negative comments :P...i want enter to this contest...but i cannot express my ideas in a visual form..
grettings
jesusR   07.21.11
Seriously? did the judges questioned why there is a "gear shifter" on an electric car? Good presentation though but the manual speed system detail is like a bunch of typos on a resume, it really discredits the entry . Other than that is good to see that someone didn't just relied on 3D to present an idea
Dave   07.21.11
I want to see the other 42 shortlisted entries
Sandy   07.21.11
I don't think they have all the shortlisted picked. 3200+ entries are alot to chose from.
Dean   07.23.11
I seen few of my friends entries that has a better design and presentation than most of those entries and they did not been notified they made it shortlisted. It's a shame the taste of the judges are not that well chosen.
Jon   07.23.11
I don't think this competition is about some specific 'taste' Jon. the main criteria the jury seems to have followed is conformity to a retro design and all the shortlisted designs we have seen respect this criteria. I have seen some not-shortlisted designs too, some were good lookimg models by very skilled 3D modellers, but nothing more that that because most of them had nothing todo with the 4L.
Most of what I have seen is a desing-something-and-pretend-it-to-be-a-4L job, while every one of these projects can be tracked back to it's origin. This is not one of those crazy car design competitions where one can design whatever he wants and this is not a graphics presentation contest neither, and I applaud the jury for having spotted good designs with not so good presentations like this.
m25   07.24.11
very expressive car
it communicates
I like it
geza jans   07.24.11
das ist alles (Fiat,Citroen oder sonstwas) .... aber kein R4.
Anke Lewen   07.24.11
hatch back is cute, but the van application is, well, akward
dbkii   07.24.11
Le point commun de tous ces designs automobiles mythiques revisités (New beettle, mini, fiat 500 et 4L ) c'est l'ajout d'une couche généreuse de cellulite... Signe de notre époque ?
Okapi   07.24.11
M25, " This competition aims to revive the R4's spirit
therefore, somehow your re-design should resemble the look of the historic model and most importantly: it should look great.". It stated resemble not retro. You are also contradicting your self. Look at Jerome Garzon design, that's a crazy design. We all know that it will not work in real life, but cool design. I like it! Most will also agreed that Mark Cunningham design looks great as it own way but lost the purity of the 4L. The friends project I have seen also followed the conformity of the competition briefs. If they did not followed the briefs what is the point of competing. The bottom line is that design is subjective even when the contestants has followed what is required by the criteria.
Jon   07.24.11
Well, every design competition is subjective to some degree. Compared to many car design competitions I think there were pretty good rules and selection here, with fresh and interesting models seen up to now and anyone blaming the jury or shortlisted should at least post links what he thinks are better designs so we can all see them.
As fo the theme, well, sure it wasn't specifically stated, but anything looking similar ends up being retro and thinking about it, renault NEEDS a retro model to remind people of old glories because they're suffering low sales of th new twingo and clio, competition in the sector is stiffer than ever and retro can do the trick: people love it, sells a lot, just look at the fiat 500 or mini, they just keep selling and are everyone's favorite.
m25   07.24.11
There are some good shortlisted like Charlie nghiem is a good example that was comparable to what I have seen that was not in the shortlisted. But there were alot of disppointed shortlisted that was shown. You just stated Renault, "they're suffering low sales of th new twingo and clio." Most of the jury are from Renault design department. Doesn't that tell you something about the design department team? Why are Renault cars suffer low sales? Maybe there are more to it internally, but for sure design theme is part of the issues. Now a day OEM design studios tried to avoid the word "retro" b/c it makes them lack of creativity. The Fiat 500 and Mini works for that brand but it does not necessary will work for Renault. Every brand are in a different circumstances.
jon   07.25.11
where are the other 42 entries????
JayK   07.25.11
In terms of design, very squarish and un-elegant. The front hood seems too big, well, the whole car seems over-sized, maybe a human next to it might help understand proportions.

The back seems very un-resolved, something many others failed on this competition.

Again, something lacks in presentation.
what ?   07.26.11
I'm anxious to see more shortlisted entries... it has been almost a week and no entry has been published...
marceloaguiar   07.26.11
i wonder do the winners know yet?
philofax   07.26.11
Hello Designboom! Where are the other elected entries? Next week maybe i will post my on my site... that everyone can see it. Most of the shortlisted entries have no circular system or have theoretical mistakes. Iīm verry shocked and it will be one of the reasons to end with the competition participation for me: much work for nothing and the winner will be a good rendered retrodesigned car with old princips behind. Thats not what was asked for! We need new possibilities for individual transportation: better CarSharing; better Tram/Bus Transportation Systems; new kind of engines, storage and generators, ... In our projekt we have a possible answer, but nowbody will see it...
Konrad   07.26.11
mmmm I think is a new version of mini. Its very cool but it seems like an older car
Agus peppers   07.26.11
So... What happened to the other shortlisted finalists? Why did Designboom stopped showing them, there are atleast 42 to be seen, for now we have 8 and now a silence about it.

I guess they werenīt expecting so many bad coments? Donīt know, but itīs a bit strange the flow of finalists stopped coming.
What?   07.26.11
I am there with What? perhaps Designboom was expecting a more positive response by readers and not so much disappointment. Needless to say, It was NOT an easy competition. I have felt like Konrad regarding the shown entries so far, I feel that what has been shown was selected more on the basis of 3D variations on the original R4 rather than on the depth of concept and exploration of what a modern day R4 could be considering the original meant so many things to so many people and the opportunity that this competition presented to evolve it and propose alternatives to the future of transportation
ArtCrit   07.26.11
I think I am more realistic on this: in the end it's a design competition and it will be the main criteria of evaluation. The critics has been pretty sharp but I don't think unexpected. When I first heard about this I thought "They're crazy; you can't redesign the 4L, it's superhard or impossible".
Circular economy and all the rest is an addition to spice up the contest and make extra difference, but I think that's asking too much from designers; there are scientists and researchers allover the world working on this for decades and we're still realistically decades far from susteinable and radically different transportation, and when it comes, I doubt it will look like any car on the road now, it will be more bicycles and bike-like cars and smart public transportation
m25   07.26.11
WHATEVER!! QUE GANE EL MEJOR!!!
YO   07.26.11
One of the contest Rules was:
It is important that you keep your design(s) confidential until the results of
the competition are published.

Please explain that , Why these 7 Design have shown before contest result????
Farzad Barkhordary   07.26.11
cause they are the results! the shortlist!
