vlad iorgulescu: renault 4 redesigned - renault 4 ever shortlisted entry

'renault 4 redesigned' by vlad iorgulescu

romanian designer vlad iorgulescu has created 'renault 4 redesigned', a vehicle which upholds the classic renault 4's simplicity and strength
through focused updates in design, technology, and circular economy. the concept is one of fifty projects shortlisted from over 3200 submissions
from 92 countries in designboom's recent RENAULT 4 EVER competition, which asked participants to redesign the renault 4 with an eye towards
historical lineage, contemporary aesthetics, and sustainable design.

this proposal maintains the look of the 1960's renault with a compact and robust body, its clean lines forming a retro but modern car.
technology also enriches the original's spirit of sophistication, for instance, it features an electric engine with liquid batteries that can be recharged
within minutes. the hood is additionally fitted with solar panels to power all the car's basic functions (lights, air conditioner, audio system etc.),
which are controlled through a central LCD screen.

'renault 4 redesigned' contributes to the circular economy through these means of generating clean energy, as well as in its construction:
it is made from sustainable and/or recycled materials, such as metal, glass, polypropylene, cotton, and plant-derived carbon-neutral plastics.

too english for a french car

In terms of design, very squarish and un-elegant. The front hood seems too big, well, the whole car seems over-sized, maybe a human next to it might help understand proportions.

The back seems very un-resolved, something many others failed on this competition.

The interior is ok, simple, the pad is a nice touch and the simplicity works.

Again, something lacks in presentation.
What?   07.19.11
Im not convinced.
charles   07.19.11
okay the body not so much...
but the combination of features on the one LCD screen inside is r e a l nice!

I have a good feeling in general, though there is lack of detail and it would have been better with a bit more sculpting.
All these entries reinforce my initial idea that redesigning the Renault 4L is something unprecedented, it's nothing like the Mini or fiat 500, it's more like redesigning the VW Golf mkI today without the mk II, III, IV or V; it's tricky because it's so boxy and if you go a bit too smooth you lose the character, if you keep the character you keep the car too 80s.

in the 3D views this R4 isn't absolutly bad .. but i'm not convinced by proportions and mostly the side view..

the amber LEDs are "brilliant" (lol) and the intense little blasts of color from the striping is a great character device
dbkii   07.19.11
don't like it, poor design and rendering
alex   07.19.11
I like "retrô" concepts, even though this is no longer the contemporary aesthetics tendency .
The rigidity of compact and robust body is attractive for the purpose it was intended, and leads us to consider diversifying the use of the model in new and attractive markets, such as taxis for large cities.
However, as succeeded to other selected works, I think that Vlad Iorgulescu could have dared more on the modernity of design concepts.

A better understanding of the industries past in society would have allowed for a more inventive design for the future.
sebastian   07.19.11
kind of boring.
the interior is OK.

it is funny how people give opinions without a clue what is actually being requested by the organizers. It is also funny how people speak about design without considering a wide range of factors which influence contemporary family needs, changes in hierarchy of needs, perceptions, which ultimately will cause an effect in design.
This is not a competition to make the R4 look like a tunned-up cheap version of the old one.

And as for renderings, it is also funny how people criticizes a design by a graphical representation which *might* not be 100% perfect for their not-so-perfect capacity of opinion.

Last but not least: an LCD in the pannel should be the LAST concern. Complimenting a design for a random screen in the dash really says everything.....
JPA   07.19.11
Pour l'instant le meilleur concept a mes yeux...ca commence a sentir la renault 4, cool job Vlad!
zozo   07.19.11
Has all of the shorlisted entries been notifiied or is this as you go picked from the judges until they reached 50? Are the shortlisted entries potientional winners or just shortlisted? It seems very confusing how they are judging this. Some shorlisted entries I see here don't deserved to be shortlisted.

Fromt and rear views are good an interesting reworking of a design classic.
The side view is a complete mis-step stylistically. Someone has said too English, perhaps this is it, it looks like a London cab, and so loses completely the 'everyman accessibility of the original concept
Steve   07.20.11
In my view the design that resonates most with the intention of the original R4 design is Miguel Herranz shortlisted submission. The design veers away from 'copying' the mini reworking, or from trying to self-consciously try to do what other updated re-workings of best seller cars have done. The retro-styling is modern (down to the palette-even) and yet potentially offers a driving experience that is not buried in too heavy an approach to re-design.
I would place may order today if it were real
Steve   07.20.11
how much cylinder does it have??? the hood size is like a 12 cylinder cars
tirdad   07.20.11
so too R4
