drill design: village for time&style

japanese studio drill design has developed the 'village' series for local furniture manufacturer time&style.

the 'village chair' derives its form from the windsor chair, aiming to solve some of the difficulties of the classic furniture icon,
such as the visible joinery of the legs, the inconsistency of the spokes and the angle of the seating. drill design's choice to work
with the windsor chair was due to its recognizable form, which remains in people's minds. from this they have developed
a comfortable seating design using modern woodworking techniques, lessing the amount of material needed for production,
meeting the high cost performance that is expected in today's modern lifestyle. the series also includes a simple stool
with similar proportions and lines.

Hmmm, not sure about these I am afraid.

They are not as elegant as the timber chairs and stools by Another Country (www.anothercountry.com) or as quirky and irreverent as Tom Dixon designs (www.tomdixon.net).

Have to say that this chair really reminds me of Ilmari Tapiovaara's Fanett chair.

Most people find the visible joinery and inconsistencies of the windsor chairs to be elegant. And all of the characteristics of a windsor chair are done for specific reasons. Trying to correct these so called difficulties clearly comes from a lack of understanding about the history and the reasons behind the structure of the windsor chair.
