maximo riera: rhino chair

'rhino chair' by maximo riera

created by spanish designer maximo riera, the 'rhino chair' is a continuation of his work which marries furniture with an animal
as its main formal component. like its predecessor the 'octopus chair', the 'rhino chair' is composed of an inner frame along its main body
in order to support its weight and reinforce its stability and balance.

this time around, riera has selected the rhino as his muse to reflect nature's capacity and mightiness. at the beginning stages of the project,
when the chair was just an idea, riera was aware that a main hurdle of designing the piece would be maintaining the proper proportions
for the seating object. this sculptural 'throne' is built in a superior scale to generate an authoritative force respecting qualities present
in the animal itself.

'rhino chair' is on show at 100% design london from september 22 - 25, 2011.

Able to scare small animals and toddlers into good behavior. Add casters to charge at domestic abusers or/and unwanted guests.

I'm with the Kadhafi theory for this horny chair

I think Kadhafi and his chair will jump from a high rooftop together very soon! I won't feel sorry for either the chair or Kadhafi..

I think this design is appallingly ill timed and not respective towards the Rhino one bit. Designboom should sincerely consider removing it from their website.

I think this is perfectly timed to bring to attention the plight of the rhino. Preservation of this mighty beast can be addressed through discussion brought about by display of such a fine piece of art.
Zilly   08.23.11
absolutely grotesque. an abomination.

how did he design it??with 'rhino'..??
kalebrikos   08.23.11
pure awesomeness
ugur bum7   08.23.11
I actually love it.

Very theatrical, expressive.

My only fear is that some idiot somewhere will demand a real rhino head to create a similar chair.
douglas montgomery   08.23.11
.... having said that, the actual seating part could have been better; less trad, perhaps simpler, or going the other way - more weirdly animalistic? leathery?
douglas montgomery   08.23.11

How can that be called design and how can you announce this on that fabolous homepage- I am very disapointed!

the piece looks to bring life to the basic function of the chair, making it more present and creating a stronger connection between the spectator, the object and its environment.
