karen ryan: sit chair project at london design week 2011

'sit' chair project by karen ryan

you will not find british designer karen ryan at any of the usual venues at this year's london design week.
instead you can find her latest work the 'sit' chair project on the streets.

'the 'sit' chair project is an alternative response for london design week 2011. I have taken two chairs one from my dining table
and one from my bedroom, both of which had been previously discarded. I designed the 'sit' brand for the use of these chairs,
the brand identity is hand stamped upon a newly prepared surface area on each individual chair. through mass consumerism
we are used to looking at design as objects of desire fed by what is fashionable and are own delusions of need.
I want to divert that gaze and alter the sense. I am taking both 'sit' chairs out onto the streets and photographing people
sitting on them with my mobile phone. I consider the 'sit' chair project a relevant design and comment on
contemporary functional design today

"both of which had been previously discarded" = found them in trash. gotta love that.

great project even if it was "done better before". which it wasn't - it was done differently.

every project by this artist that i see just lacks a point or looks like something i've seen before.
It's almost like this artist is avoiding doing some actual work.

Sorry but what are you actually trying to do?
If you want to respond to the current state of design or the design festival, the best thing to do is not to participate. By participating you just add to the festival. This kind of work makes claims to reject the institution that it is actually latching onto. If there is a protest against the institution. DON'T BE APART OF IT!

fantastic riff on "branding" - is it printed on or actually branded?
dbkii   09.22.11
A protest of consumption through the eye of the most sophisticated personal technolocial device known to man . . . the mobile phone. Where did we go wrong?

sit, the photography project!

I was just about to mention Matthias Ries's version of a similar project. Glad someone else beat me to it!
