the 't20' bamboo bike is a prototype by french designer antoine fritsch as part of an ongoing
research project to investigate themes exploring changing behaviors related to sustainable development.
although the body is made out of bamboo, other elements include cork, steel, aluminum and rubber.
surprisingly, the small motor, which is hidden under the footrest, can reach a cruising speed of
35 km/hr (21.7 mph) for a range of about 40 km/hr (24.8 mph). the acceleration works similar to
a scooter, employing manual power from the user to push the bike forward until it gets going,
while a hybrid cork structure acts as a fusion between a seat and backrest for a comfortable ride.

I'm having a hard time believing that some of that joinery will hold up

dbkii, agreed. The seat column in particular. Bamboo bends but imagine bumps and potholes. Neat concept, though. I'd try it for sure.

great simple design for simple materials and use! The joinery looks like it's internally reinforced by steel plates and the flex is fine if you don't weigh 300 pounds I think. The scooter concept is a good direction because the cranks/chains/belts/sprockets etc of a pedal bike is too visually complex for wooden bikes as well as all the stresses those systems create.

just realized, simplify this even more and just use a Copenhagen wheel and ditch the battery system in the deck! Not sure what the "range" of that system is so more power capacity might be a good thing.

I have to point out that this article is very poorly researched and written..

The range should be a distance, not a speed. And the motor is not under the footrest. It is the hub of the rear wheel. The battery is under the footrest.

If such basics are wrong, I question all the other designboom articles I've just read!
