a 100 cm long self-supporting lamp, ‘lightweight beam’ designed by alfonso ruano canales serves both as an office lamp or ambient light source, depending on the applied direction of the support structure. the LED’s driver electronics are concealed within a brass pencil vase featuring a dimmer and mini jack connections between all the elements. based on LED technology, the inner logic and aesthetics of this system defines the construction and form of the configuration as it embraces the natural lightness and linear quality of the bulb.

an aluminum mounting plate serves as the core of the piece, and the addition of a few simple components completely redefines its appearance. the aluminum plate remains unmodified, all the parts are simply tightened. ‘lightweight beam’ is part of a project under development, where the same basic system of combining a mounting plate, LED, and lens are explored and modified to create a diverse family of lamps.
