budapest design week 2011: elastic chair by velichko velikov

london-based, bulgarian-born home wear designer velichko velikov created 'lastika' in the italian lagostudio workshop.
the circular shape of the steel tubular frame, in combination with the 40 vibrant elastic bands that comprise the
seat of the chair, has a flower-like resemblance. the color scheme of the elastic belts are reminiscent of the traditional shades
of bulgarian tapestry work. 'lastika's lightweight design is highly portable while also upholding structural integrity as
an entirely stable piece.

the piece was featured at budapest design week 2011  in the program series 'design hét couleur locale:
európa snínei tárgyakban': the colours of europe in objects design exhibition’ within the bulgarian cluster.
three contemporary projects from thirty countries of the european union were featured in the exhibit as the cultural
and artistic characteristics of each nation were appreciated in each display. the pieces were selected based upon
the guidance of that nation's design experts by assessing the artists' ability to convey the local color,
tone and aesthetic of their respective homes.

Seriously? Take an existing model, make the straps coloured - claim as new.
bob   10.20.11
At which model you are pointing on? can you give an example?
velichko   10.20.11
Clue - 1958, French. Designer called Hoffer. Chair called Spider.
bob   10.20.11
you mean this:
http://modchartreuse.com/images/vintage/seating/lc20_02.jpg
heh, nothing to do with the lastika chair.
Take a careful look at my design. It meant to be mass produced - in ANY angle - low production price, easy assemble, safe use. AND 40 EQUAL elastic belts with a frame.
HOW can you compare both chairs?! They are not even close as a concept. The chair you are pointing at is hand made, not optimised, just an experiment - more art than a real product. Not to mention that it is a three legged one. And DEFINITE|LY not an existing model - you can't buy this one in a regular shop - because it is not enough efficient to be mass produced.
Or i am wrong?
velichko   10.21.11
Velichko, Sure there's slight differences but you'd be hard pushed to say the concept is nothing to do with your design. For what it's worth your design is much prettier, but the question here is - did you know about the Spider design before you set to work on your chair? If so we can place this in the Homage category.
GiantPuppy   10.21.11
No, the concept at the beginning was really different from the final result. And the main point was - easy to assemble, production wise result. Will post some more pictures tomorrow as this need clarification. Still - i think this concept has different way of thinking, sorry if you can't see it...
velichko   10.21.11
not to offend you velichko, but when I saw the photo of another chair, it really did look kind of similar for me. So you are saying that you have never seen the spider chair before you started working on your own design?
sean   10.21.11
It is different, he added an extra leg !
stefan   10.21.11
I think this elastic chair is awesome. Great design. The only similarity between the one you lot are talking about and this one is the round metal frame for seating. So what once this is used, no one else can make round seating chairs? These are elastic bands, not web. And the whole vision and style of the chair is so different.

Margherita Chair by Alessandro Grassi but improved.
enciamet   10.21.11
Enciamet, can you post a link to see that chair?

here you go....!
enciamet   10.21.11
Thank you, Enciamet!
Hmm, this one looks more like that spider chair everyone is talking about. But it's still a different vision. Still i'd like to have that elastic chair, rather than the other 2 pointed out here. I like the elastic bands and the colours and you can never get the same happy feeling with the net. And i guess seating is more comfortable in the elastics rather than the net. Design is for how things work, not only how they look. Wise man, Steve Jobs!
Stefan   10.21.11
Yep, i agree... this chair is funnier and colorful, just to let you know the margherita chair is elastic too... same concept, same shape... i guess the elastic chair is as much as confortable as the Grassi one...

anyway i like more this chair, as i was saying... improved!...
enciamet   10.21.11
@Stefan - thank you for the good words!
Ok guys, as i promised - i did a folder with some old versions of the chair.
The main idea was to have a chair with a feeling of a hammock. Actually i started with a square frame, but it was changed afterwards as the circle is simplier and easier for production - not that much weldings and cuting/sanding.
But anyway - i will let the pictures to speak for the process:
http://velichkovelikov.com/lastika/
The last version was the daisy_bw.jpg, but i wanted to simplify it and i came with the idea of the belts with tie-like knot just when i was working on the real prototype. This solve (simplify) the frame - otherwise it has to be done from 4 parts.
Also the wooden legs was changed to only metal one with welding in terms of easy and lowcost production.
I always appreciate comments over my work, but to think that i just take existing model and change it to have something in production is not right as i am sure that everyone is doing his best to be unique in his work.
velichko   10.21.11
i really like it!
