tokujin yoshioka: water block at musee d'orsay

invited to participate in the renovation project of the musée d'orsay in paris, japanese designer tokujin yoshioka's
glass bench 'water block' has been installed within the museum's impressionist gallery alongside of works of art by
master painters manet, degas, monet, cézanne and renoir. the placement of the seating object whose surface mimicks rippling water,
is quite fitting placed within the space, reflecting the subjects of the paintings on display, offering a harmonious interaction
between history and the present day.

too shiny, too glossy, too protagonist for such a collection of masterpieces... please no!
marcos   10.28.11
can you sit on it?

I think the bench is quite beautiful, but it's placement in this space is a bit wrong. This is a space dedicated to appreciating the masterpieces on display and everything should contribute to that focus. The bench might be a distraction.

I much prefer to see Tokujin's bench installed in the context of these paintings rather than some large, boxy, cushioned cubes as is typical of museum seating. I think the fact that it is made of glass, it's clear with minimal details, makes it a nice addition.

g, i am pretty sure it can be sat on, and i am with you christina.
it might seem a bit 'contemporary' in juxtaposition to the master paintings, but because it is colorless and transparent it makes only a subtle impact on the space. i don't think it detracts from the work on show.
