peter bristol: american standards lamp

'american standard lamp' by peter bristol

seattle-based designer peter bristol has created the 'american standard lamp', a luminous critique of the 'american standard'
in architectural and design materials and methods. the homogenized nature of construction materials within the united states
leaves very little to the influence of the designer when the functions of these standards are necessary for the completion of a project.
the utilitarian relationship between the dimensions and parts of these standard construction materials are joined in this design.
the rectangular lamp is comprised of an american standard light switch and power outlet and cord;
its shape echos that of the standard materials decorating its exterior. to use, one must simply flip the light switch
in order to produce a diffused light. additionally, the exterior boasts a spare power outlet.

the illuminated lamp has an additional plug that may be utilized while the light is in use

the small lamp produces a diffused light that is neither too bright nor too dim

inspiration for the lamp design was derived from the standards of american construction materials

designboom has received this project from our 'DIY submissions' feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their own work for publication.

ad hoc meets minimalism

"brilliant"

Is that a AC cord with dual male ends?
Is your life insurance policy up to date?
How clever. More "too dim" than "too bright"

very nice, would love to see this on European standards. Might be interesting to to see the change in dimension and relation of things.
till pupak   11.25.11
@till pupak: We don't have standards in Europe ;)

Anyway very clever idea.
alfanick   11.25.11
@alfanic: well, how do you explain EN numbers then?
for example: European standard EN 50075
if you Google it you will find the "Europlug"

talking about European standards does not mean
that we all follow them. but they exist.
And for sure they will influence the appearance
of a project of this kind.

this is way bitchin
