philippe malouin: gridlock furniture

'scarpa desk'
montreal-born london-based designer philippe malouin continues to expand on his gridlock series with five new furniture pieces.
entitled 'gridlock 2', the bowl, desk, shelf and two lighting objects exhibit a brutalist aesthetic expressed through the
linear metal and concrete forms malouin has developed for this collection.
the formal structures of each of the pieces are executed using brass dowels, arranged in systematic, repetitive geometric patterns
reminiscent of architectural volumes. the 'powel bowl', 'scarpa desk' and 'luder shelves' are each paired with
concrete slabbed surfaces contrasting the warmth of the brass.
with the 'svetko lamp' and 'delorean wall light', the brass, grid forms allow light to be scattered through their openings,
projecting moire patterns onto surrounding walls.
the industrial series of furniture is on show at nextlevel galerie, paris until january 14th, 2012.
