'overade' is a foldable urban bike helmet

'overade' is a foldable unisex helmet, designed by patrick jouffret of french design studio agency 360
in collaboration with engineer philippe arrouart. the device provides as much protection
as a standard bicycle helmet but folds up to a compact, easily transportable size when not in use.
small enough to slip into a purse or backpack, the design aims to address the low percentage
of urban bicyclists who utilize helmets.

first prototyped in 2010, 'overade' is expected to enter commercial production within 2012.

The design looks beautiful fully opened.
But, if the design's intent is a foldable helmet that fits into a purse or backpack, it has failed.
The size metamorphosis doesn't seem to make much difference. A full helment in a backpack or purse leaves the helmet interior for holding other items just as a folded helmet would leave room around it.

@faf, that means there are other ideas that need to be explored )

The concept and the whole idea of folding a bike helmet so that it isn\'t as big to carry around is an awesome idea. The folding mechanism that is used if very well designed and can fold very tightly. Even though I do not ride a bike anymore, I feel that this helmet will used by many people due to its great style and even the materials that are used

Amazing! I would defintly buy this as soon as it comes out.

Love the idea but I am worried about its safety. If it takes an impact, what is the chances it will fail and start going into the collapsed position while on the person's head.
Zach   02.02.12
during IMPACT, maybe your head will also fold.

i'm worried at those screws..

awesome Idea, can you make one for snowboarding?
ddog   02.02.12
what is I crash and the helmet folds in on my head?

i wont mind having one for non biking activities. but the brim on the front is hideous. can it be removed?
wingtorn   02.03.12
Make it an entire Iron Man Helmet and I'm SOLD! :D

The idea is there, but the result might not exactly what dome people expect.
Why not design an inflated helmet, or a helmet that can be integrated with a bicycle (become part of it)

Hi,
awsome - excellent for commuters leaving their bikes at the station.
The only thing I would definetely improve is the air intake aperture area in front - it will be too hot in summer. The upper side is very good, back is too closed also. I had an old similar helmet and dumped it.
And it should never ever brake when it just falls off the bike - happens all the time.
