the ‘recreational island’ developed by henry ward in collaboration with BMT nigel gee and eco yacht toys

the concept was developed by transportation designer henry ward, tested and in development by british naval architects BMT nigel gee for eco yacht toys. although designed explicitly for luxury yachting, the technology behind the recreation island may serve in fields ranging from event management to military use.

measuring 10 by 8 meters (32.75 x 26.17 feet) when deployed, the platform provides additional space whether used docked to the back of a yacht or stabilized via four anchors in open water. a pressurized hydraulic system opens the island, which when closed can be stored in the garage of private or public ships, and put into place via standard tender cranes.

‘recreation island’ can be used as a swimming and diving dock, dining area, small boat dock, or for relaxation, capable of being modified to specification. the developers suggest that hotels and other organizations could use the island to rent out to stayers as a kind of private beach. alternatively, the island might provide a way for jury members or journalists at water-based gaming events to adopt a closer perspective.

the development team is also currently considering ways to configure a similarly designed island for use as a portable helicopter landing platform, a design strategy that could have uses in the emergency and military sectors in addition to that of luxury design.
