outofstock design studio, based in both singapore and barcelona, has created ‘laputa’, an installation depicting the landscape found in the novel ‘gulliver’s travels’ by jonathan swift. copper cones are crumpled, their texture juxtaposed with moss, and hung from the ceiling, portraying an island floating in the white landscape of a tent. the project is a contemplation on the chaos of our society and ponders whether these fictional landscapes are the only place where we can make sense of our increasingly surreal realities.

the workshop gallery, founded by outofstock debuted the installation as part of ‘singaplural‘ during singapore furniture design week 2012. it was one of five public art projects presented under the theme of environmental sustainability within the exhibition design-larger-than-life.

2012 marks the inaugural year of ‘singaplural‘, a design trail which hosts multiple IFFS satellite exhibitions at various locations throughout singapore’s city centre. these ‘routes’ focus on architecture, furniture, interiors, graphic and fashion design. a main highlight of this new event is design*SCAPE, a concept which alters the conventional way of individual exhibition transforming a congregated platform for local designers or talents to showcase their design artworks.
