in ‘colour one’, dutch design team scholten & baijings showcases a concept car, exhibited in pieces based on the bodywork and powertrain of the ‘MINI one‘ vehicle by MINI. ‘we propose to literally dissect MINI ONE, peel it like an onion, and then re-build it based on our vision and with our signature. the concept car will be created by combining these different layers into a whole,‘ explain the designers. the installation features segmented units from the vehicle: the chassis shell, a model steering wheel and car, concept windshields, wheel, bumper, and other components, made varyingly of paper, metal, and textiles in a range of colours and finishes. an extensive collection of sketches, fabric swatches, models, and project influences can be examined through glass display tables situated in the courtyard. the designers note that they use an ‘atelier way of working’: from sketch to model-making and experimentation, with the final product evolving throughout. ‘the design process is driven by intuition. the journey, the driving experience, the display of pride, the perception of the space, the interaction with the surroundings, and the feeling of speed are all elements presented.’
