eurobike award 2012: lowriders

the winners of the eurobike award 2012 have been announced. organized by iF design, 439 entries from 28 countries were submitted into the competition under nine different categories: mountain bikes, cross bikes, racing bikes, urban bikes, special-purpose bikes, e-bikes/pedelecs, cothes, parts/components and accessories.

from august 29th to september 1st an exhibition of all the award-winning products were on display at the eurobike tradeshow in foyer west at the friedrichshafen exhibition grounds, germany. the eurobike award was developed to offer a platform in which people could present their ideas for the bicycle industry. a number of lowrider designs were submitted this year. here is a look at two of those shortlisted:

scorpion FS e-trike in its folded state

the ‘scorpion FS e-trike’ is a full-suspension foldable touring trike which has a 26-inch rear wheel which offers less rolling resistance, and easier obstacle traversing. it features a self-locking hinge (patent pending) for quick folding resulting in a compact easy-to-transport package of 123 x 83 x 69cm. it has independent full suspension with adjustable macpherson struts on the front wheels, a unique stabilizer system and long wheelbase for maximum driving pleasure. ASG steering provides smooth and precise control combined with small turning circle. designed and manufactured by HP velotechnik OHG of germany, the trike has ergonomic rider support with a comfortable, adjustable recumbent seat for efficient cycling.

E-greenmachine

the  ‘e-greenmachine’ designed and manufactured by FLEVELO international has an enclosed drive chain so that chain wear is no longer an issue. the bike offers the option to attach an electric assistance unit. the motor is placed in a low centre of gravity position and drives the rohloff speedhub gears. the two-wheeler is powered by LiFePo4 battery which can be recharged 2000 times. the close proximity between the energy source and gears makes it very efficient in terms of energy usage. the weight of the unit (motor + battery) is only 6 kg. lights remain separate from the frame.
