architectural ceramics – old at: clayarch gimhae museum, china from: august 9, 2008 to february 9, 2009

at the entrance to the clayarch gimhae museum guests are greeted by ‘dragon spiral’ a huge dragon like structure created by japanese artist takamasa kuniyasu. made from a 100 year old chinese bricks and korean wood, the structure is a small glimpse of what is on display in the ‘architectural – ceramics – old’ exhibition.

divided into four sections: old architectural ceramics, re- defining old architectural ceramics, house shaped earthernware and photography by mark de fraeye the exhibition covers a diverse range of ceramics throughout history. it features art work created from old worn, bricks, tiles, slates and other architectural ceramics, salvaged from old homes and buildings in korea and china. in the old architectural ceramics section approximately 1000 artifacts from east asia between 5 b.c and 19th century a.d are displayed highlighting the role of ceramics as a building material in ancient times. featured in the house shaped earthenware collection are 215 pieces of burial accessories made from bake clay.the exhibition aims to give a new perspective to architectural ceramics.
