stick chair by emmanuelle moureaux

100% design london at: earls court, london (k100 japan booth) from: september 18 – 21, 2008

the ‘stick chair’ by emerging tokyo-based french architect and designer emmanuelle moureaux, will be exhibited at the upcoming 100% design london, 2008.  first debuted at last year’s 100% design tokyo, the chair is inspired by ‘mikado’, a pick-up sticks game which originated in europe.  the oblique placement of 7 round wooden sticks supports a heavy piece of acrylic, creating a perfect equilibrium.  the design is expressed through the beautiful illusion of refraction, and the sticks appear as if they are being soaked in water.

‘the structural equilibrium has been pushed to the limits and although it looks unbalanced, this architecture-like structure is the final result of many attempts to achieve what you could call an ‘unbalanced balance’.’ – EM
