‘save a product’ by 5.5 designers

the 45,000 products in a warehouse

5.5 designers spent two year working on a tableware collection for an unnamed ‘important glassworker
group’. 15 days before the launch of the product line the company immediately halted the project due to
a change in internal functions. now 45,000 products sit in their packages with nowhere to go. thinking
about the reckless waste it would be to simply destroy the products, 5.5 designers is truly putting their
money where their design is and buying the entire product inventory. for a symbolic price of 1 euro,
customers can ‘save a product’. the pieces will be for sale at ‘les puces du design’ from october 10-12
at quai de la loire in paris. they are also for sale at their online shop for the normal price.

during this operation, we are demonstrating that a designer is not only responsible for the objects
aesthetics but also he is a guardian and a witness. he can offer commercial alternatives at the beginning
stage but likewise at the end of the journey.

to be seen as more than just radiators, 'matières à chaud' should be viewed as a landscape in which artificial materials create a certain ambient heat.
