one of the latest exhibitions at bristol’s arnolfini contemporary art center is ‘on purpose: design concepts’.
the show examines the idea of conceptual design through various projects and also questions who or what
defines something as design. through interventions and work from a variety of designers, the exhibit aims
to shed light on where the line between design and contemporary art exists. the title of the show stems
from a key point of contention between the two , design is said to have a purpose. this exhibit questions
‘whether ‘purpose’ is actually its ultimate constraint’. ‘on purpose is the second in the ‘concept store’ series
of projects at arnolfini, exploring the realms of marketing, design and experience economy. åbäke,
droog design, daniel eatock, electronest, ann-sofie back, will holder, peter jensen, onkar kular & noam toran,
metahaven, alex rich, savage and yuri suzuki are all included in the exhibit.
