after the second world war a rivalry began between the world’s two superpowers: the soviet union and the united states of america began. a few years later the cold war ensued. during this time new technologies were continually being developed to produce weapons and launch space programmes. art, design and architecture were also strongly influenced during this period, as each wanted to show their idea of modernity.

the cold war design exhibition displays art, film, architecture and design between the period of 1945 – 70 focussing on the ways in which artists and designers responded to the conditions of the cold war.
