‘the counterfeit crochet project’, 2007 (part of ‘forged realities’ at universalstudios gallery, beijing, china)

artist stephanie syjuco solicited a selection of crocheters to create hand-made counterfeit designer
handbags. the project became known as ‘the counterfeit crochet project’ and features knock-off bags
by makers around the world. with only low-resolution images to work off, each designer aimed to
recreate the bags as best they could, taking liberties when necessary. the makers were encouraged
to keep and wear their bags, ‘in an attempt to insert strange variants into the stream of commerce
and consumption’. instructions are now available and anyone can make their own crochet knock-off.
since its inception the project has been exhibited in manila, beijing, istanbul and san francisco.
