winning bike rack by ian mahaffy and maarten de greeve

ian mahaffy and maarten de greeve have been selected as the winners in the competition to design new
ike racks for the city of new york. while we previously told you about the novelty, shape based racks by
artist david byrne, mahaffy and de greeve’s design is much more reserved. the circular shape of their
rack mimics the size and form of a bicycle wheel and features a cross-brace to add stability. the racks
appear to float on the ground and are made from cast metal. over the next three years more than 5,000
of their designs will be installed in the city. core.form-ula has an in-depth look at one of the other finalists,
fadarchitecture. their design was based on computer algorithms that generated organic forms.
