‘found space tiles’
touchy-feely is the design studio of architects stephanie davidson and georg rafailidis. the studio
focuses on haptic design in architecture, that is how the built environment can offer bodies more
heightened sensory experiences or ‘sensory conversations’, as they define it. one of the key
elements of their practise is making prototypes of their designs to test them and understand their
interaction with the body first hand.
‘found space tiles’ is their most developed project to date. the design involves a series of ceramic
tiles that are designed to fit in between the body and a flat surface, turning negative space into
a positive. the project was exhibited at designboom’s 2008 new york mart. ‘public heat’ is a similar
project, where a large heating pad was placed in a public context encouraging users to come
close, warming themselves up in cold weather. their more traditional design projects include
‘spoon beads’, ceramic beads moulded with spoons and ‘fanta cups’ a ceramic cup cast from
the neck of the iconic fanta bottle.
