nendo: ghost stories

nendo: ghost stories
friedman benda gallery, new york
february 27 – march 28, 2009
the tokyo architecture and design studio nendo will be exhibiting their work for the first time in new york
at friedman benda gallery. ‘nendo: ghost stories’ will feature a special installation by the japanese studio
that consists of 40 sculptural works also known as ‘cabbage chairs’. the ‘cabbage chair’ was originally
designed in response to fashion designer issey miyake’s exhibition themed around living in the 21st
century. nendo focused on designing a chair ‘without making use of conventional chair-manufacturing
assumptions’. instead they utilizes pleated paper rolls which are actually waste from miyake’s clothing
pleating process. the chairs conceal their function, opening to reveal the seat. the chair aims to demonstrate
the power of the ‘hand-made’ in this day of machine-assisted production.
