I found this post very interesting and inspiring to me. It collects some of the simplest but useful bookmark designs. The designers are very thoughtful in terms of the convenience of the users. Intuition is what works there. Most of these designs effectively express their function and hint the users to grab on them. A small action from the users will easily retrieve the page where they stopped last time. The “squeeze” bookmark not only marks the page, it lifts the pages just enough for the users to put his/her fingers in between. The designer of the bookmark lamp even thought about the placement of the book when the reader is not reading it and steps away, and it’s done by simply “sticking” a branch off the stem of the lamp. The branch itself then serves as the bookmark, killing two birds with one stone. Sometimes a design doesn’t have to look really amazing for it to do its job. What really works is the idea behind it, and this has become a new design philosophy for myself.

I myself hate reading. Long articles usually won’t get me started on reading, even if the subject is of my interest. I often scan for images. I visualize things faster than I can digest text; even a graph or chart means more than words for me. When I see a new product design, I like to look at its renderings and start guessing how it works and how a user may use it, rather than reading the long description first. So, yeah... in a way I’m lazy reading, but I’m just choosing my way to obtain information quicker based on my visual capability.
