a sign of respect, fair use is back in the news

the new york times reported that publishers are unhappy with the use of excerpts of their content.

designboom recently took part in an international survey and answered the following questions:
--
what is your opinion?
actually, we also don't like it too much when other websites use ALL of our images
(whether owned by designboom or not) in their articles.
for us traveling, photographing, or just researching photo material is fun,
but also work that involves labour, energy and a certain budget.
from our point of view, seeing the entire material entirely transferred to other sites
with just a credit   - VIA DESIGNBOOM - is not perceived so well.
--
why do you think you are penalized?
while we are charmed by the fact that the contributors of these other sites like
what we do, we feel our work is exploited.
networking, it happens then that other bloggers re-publish or cite these new articles,
and not our post. they don't feel the need anymore to credit designboom,
because the republished article is already complete.
fact is that a lot of the traffic for this specific topic / article, which was originally
curated and edited by us, goes back to others and not to us.
--
how much content should a blogger be allowed to excerpt from another source while
linking to that source?
for the future we would hope that our friends' sites use, let's say only 30% of the
image material of our articles and then link and drive a significant amount of traffic
back to us. in fact, this has never been an issue, and in the past we all have agreed on this,
blogs usually do (before design feed aggregators ate up everything).
--
any idea how to solve this problem?
there is no advantage becoming combative, we encourage to contact us if in doubt
or if you want to reproduce more of the body than a short excerpt and 30% of images.

what is your opinion?
we welcome all suggestions and feedback

There’s no question that the volume of blogs and content available is overwhelming. But I guess people have a hard time to monetize their blogs. The Newsweek put it: ''while blogs can do many wonderful things, making huge amounts of money isn’t one of them.'' Often there is no or very little money to pay for content and most bloggers overestimate the value of blogging and underestimate the work involved.
The blogs are perceived as very much a collaborative project for young, aspiring journalists who relish an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and creative work. It's easy to re publish images and add a few own words. That's cheap content. There's a proliferation of competitors and unpaid internships and so called ''guest bloggers'' and ads ''We're always looking for new contributors.'' This is quite offensive to those who earn a living from freelance creative content.

If you want to get money, then take a buissness, where you can such much as you can. If you want to get your stuff you an your friends, then make a blog with a Password. After this you are save.
And after all, think about your Name cut and past blog

Trend Spotting; Most Popular; Most Read; Most Influential; Most Emailed; Most Commented. Exclusive Content; Early Exclusives. Rapidly Growing Readership; That's The Reason Why.

lots of the comments here obviously show why nothing will change. it got normal that creative work is regarded as being on about the same level as selling sausages in the supermarket.
you should connect with all the other hi-quality design-blogs and charge all together a small monthly fee for reading (2-5 Euro). this is the only way to make people understand that journalist work involves much more than 2 mins daily. but all blogs need to do this together to make it work.
i have to admit: the problem of stealing content is not solved then, though.

Get over yourselves. I run an online technology publication and having your content ripped off is no different than knock-off handbags. Ultimately it just builds your brand.

The answer is NOT in protecting your stuff, it's in building a community and maintaining your relationships with them...reaching out with original material that keeps them coming back.
Copywryter   03.05.09
That's exactly right Copywryter! The beauty of the internet is the endless flow of information, the infinite links that always lead you to something new and exciting, and the convergence of views and opinions from all over the world...NOT the opposite.

Restricting information flow is quite backwards if you ask me. If anything, a stance like this one only helps to alienate your crowd of designers, architects, artists, and bloggers that regard your site/brand as a reference in all of these fields.

there are only a few who produce, all others pick, and recycle
