‘spiral lamp’ by chris kirby

designer chris kirby will exhibit his ‘spiral lamp’ part of a submission of works by tokyo designers keiji ashizawa, mikiya kobayashi, and DRILL design at this year’s designersblock exhibition during milan design week 09.

the ‘spiral lamp’ is made from a single piece of plastic sheet with slits in it.  by bending it together and intermeshing it with itself, an intricate shell is formed.  it explores the interaction between light and matter, the impassable and the transmissive, flat and voluminous, and growing complex forms from a simple starting point.
