italian designer alessandro mendini creates a product and furniture collection inspired by california for
cleto munari. the ‘2008’ collection features silver sculptures, rugs and furniture based on the utopian
ideals of the state of california. the collection is being exhibited for three months at the ara pacis museum
in rome and opened yesterday. the four furniture pieces in the collection are each accompanied by their
own rug and the silver sculptures each represent one of eight different US states. the furniture consists of
‘los angeles’ a cocktail bar, ‘venice’ a vertical cabinet, ‘san francisco’ a partition wall and ‘golden gate’
an etched glass table featuring mendini’s personal notes. mendini describes california as ‘a magical
destination, a mirage, a warm fertile and colourful place’. this unique perspective is clearly evident is the
brightly coloured and polished pieces in this new collection.
