karim rashid: 'kairo' for riva 1920

we have just recieved images of karim rashid's newest project 'kairo' chair that he designed
for italian company riva 1920. his chair will be on display during milan design week 09.

'when I first sketched the kairo chair for riva 1920 I was firstly inspired by the
manufacturing process,
to cut out of a solid trunk of a tree a one piece object with
as little material removed as possible.
the arched simple cuts from the chair were
inspired a recent trip to egypt where I saw the eye shapes
everywhere from ancient
double curved stools and chairs to hand carved vessels to the basic lines found

in the hieroglyphics.'

beautiful!
Ernst   04.16.09
that is a lot of good wood. cool concept, but seems wasteful.
dave   04.17.09
anyone who have the money to waste can do this. probably even do a better job. fugly ,nonsense and simply wasteful. if he really set out to cut out a minimum of material then i'm sure this is not the shape to go!
Andy   04.17.09
The first picture was so enticing. Hand built work is so much more satisfying. Robot craftsmanship.
Nones   04.17.09
I continue to be amazed that Karim Rashid is a design superstar.
Alberto   04.17.09
He is like a crappier marc newsome
Mike   04.17.09
design should be in harmony with nature...
first pic looks interesting but the process to get there is less appealing:
robot instead of real carpenter
and
that waste of wood...
doesnt fit together according my ephemeral soul...
yalcin   04.17.09
like the chair,
I do not see waste material,
sawdust is probably then used for wood pellets!
olga   04.17.09
didn't think rashid had it in him-or one of his employees.
brooklynsun   04.17.09
at yalcin: you never loose or waste material, but you loose and waste the value of it ! the difference lays in value creation vs. value reduction

surprisingly this work is not pink or green or whatever ugly colour, its simply the natural colour. thanks for this karim !
SUNSHINE DESIGN   04.18.09
oh! texture is a propriety of material not of Karim!
mandal   04.18.09
You commentators are all pretty naive.
Is this really the first time you see how woodwork is done in a manufacture place?
Alberto   04.19.09
ITS BEAUTIFUL
KAREN   04.19.09
nice…interesting…would be great to see in a landscape with hundreds of these chairs
Nakul   04.19.09
this is a pretty good design. you can imagine it made of recycled wood or other materials as well.
Eric   04.19.09
looks cozy. and light. id like to see karim move it. and sit in it for longer than ten minutes.

if you know about the manufacturer you'll know they work with solid blocks of seriously aged timber, collaborating @ Salone w big name designers to construct a museum piece. last year they had a monolith cantelever table bench from a tree trunk that'd been calcified in a swamp for 30,000 yrs - amazing. am NOT a Karim fan tho AM pleasantly surprised at this effort. could be someone in his office. Could be for once he's working with raw material?......& not plastic!!
