hans sandgren jakobsen: butler and rocking stools

the rockable stool, 1999 (made by orebo)
danish designer hans sandgren jakobsen blends classic scandinavian design with his own style sensibility
to create this series of furniture pieces for the manufacturer orebo. the series consists of four pieces;
a coathanger, tall mirror and two rocking stools. each piece is made using only wood (besides the mirror)
and takes design inspiration from a stethoscope and flower stamens. ‘the rockable’ was the first in the
series designed for a competition and consists of a rockable circular base topped with 37 poles shaped
with a knob on top to support the sitter. ‘the unrockable’ was next and uses 35 knobbed poles on a flat
rectangular base (preventing from rocking). jakobsen later translated the design concept into a coat rack
(varying the height of the knob to hold different items) and a mirror (replacing the knobs with a long
mirror).
