executive jet aviation

as well as having an extensive archive of airplane designs the museum of flight website boasts a collection
of almost 150 'vintage' airline logos. of course a large number of them feature the birds, wings and fins
you'd expect but there is also some unexpected iconography in the mix.

Nice logos. Really appreciate the ones of Air Afrique and Garuda Indonesia.
And indeed, Trans Brasil is quite unexpected :)

Trans Brasil's color actually come from a long tradition of representing the "different colors of Brazil".
The predecessor of this livery was a different two-color combination to every single airplane, each representing a Brazilian natural resource or aspect.
The "rainbow tail" came on the early 80's to bring them all together.
It used to be a very nice airline, BTW. Too bad it's gone now.

Also, I'm really curious: why was that unexpected?

Transbrasil's logo was very popular here in Brasil - in that time the rainbow doesn't appear for us as a gay symbol.
It was a symbol of joy and tropical colors, reinforced with the stylized sun of it's early visual identity.
It symbolizes another kind of air company, a warmer and cozy way of flying, very different from the others, wich has very serious and tedious blue logos (a compass for VARIG's logo, for example, or a simple logotype for VASP's).
After some years, the other two companies had it's visual identity fully redesigned.
