enrique muda bull: 'drinking straws lattice' at DMY berlin design festival 09

from afar, spanish designer enrique muda bull's 'drinking straws lattice' looks like a normal room divider.
but upon closer inspection, one sees that the panel is made up entirely of drinking straws.
from the front, the appearance of the straws is totally flat, however the distance that observers
stand from the screen, as well as the movements they produce will determine what is seen through.
if there is eye contact between two people when they are facing each other and standing very close
to the lattice, they will be able to see an area of the other person, completely isolated
like a pupil of an eye. if one person stays close to the lattice and the other one goes further
and further away, one will see more of the surface of the straws and what stands behind them.

when people stand closely, on opposite sides of the lattice they are able to see a small area of the person
across from them

1, I DID NOT COPY IT.
I WAS WAITING IN A CAFE AND MY BOSS ALWAYS ASKED ME TO WALK UPSTAIRS FOR A BUNCH OF STRAWS. I LOOKED THROUGH LIKE IF IT WOULD BE A MAGNIFYING LENS AND SAW SOMETHING INTERESTING WAS HAPPENING THERE.
2, AT DMY A FEW PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD ALREADY SEEN IT. THAT IT HAD BEEN MADE AN INSTALLATION CREATING FORMS&TEXTURES WITH DIFFERENT LENGHTS AND ADDING OBJECTS TO THE STRAWS MASS.
BUT NOT EXHIBITED AT ITS FIRST STAGE, JUST THE LOOK THROUGH, AS A LATTICE.
3, IF IT HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY MADE AS A LATTICE. THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED COLLECTIVE AWARNESS. AND THIS IS REAL.
4, IT IS EASY TO GET ALL EXCITED ACCUSING SOMEONE ELSE AND REINFORCE YOUR PREJUDICE.
5, THE BALL IN THE HEAD YOU NEED A BIT OF SENSE OF HUMOR TO ENJOY IT. IT IS USEFUL IN WINTER IF YOU RIDE A BICYCLE.
6, "DESIGNERS SHAMELESSLY RIPPING ARTISTS".
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
THIS KIND OF GENERALIZATIONS FEED HATE AND RESENTMENT.
RIPPING DEPENDS FROM THE PERSON NOT FROM THE FIELD.
7, I'LL HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE IN DEPTH ON THE NET I GUESS.
8, I INVITE YOU TO CHECK OUT MY BLOG AND SEE THE WHOLE BODY OF MY WORK. WE CAN KEEP TALKING FROM THERE.
Sad even more when other designers compare others to this work, one created clouds inside, another haze. Every work is different through the artists eye, that is what art is, the artists eye of the world.
…and all caps...no...
The material used in this case is the same as the artists and designers you have mentioned, but the idea is different. Many creatives work in the same materials but use them in different applications. Enrique's work adds a bit of humor to our often serious society.
In such a connected global society, similar things appear and they are not necessarily born in a linear time-frame, one influenced by the other. It is a different interpretation each time - even if it's the same material and similar structure.
Yes, there IS (!) the straw work by Tara Donovan and then the less interesting application of Tokujin Yoshioka. They were the precedessors. This new work is of interest too.
Give him a chance!
Relativism here is king apparently. Not to mention a bit of spite. If everyone broke new ground then noone would even try creating. Parthenogenesis only happens with bees (considering the comment about bees, I think its funnily relevant- for non believers look it up... THEY DO).
Isn't it that straw is a raw material for a designer? If somebody is using pencils he is bound to make lines or dots or a stain of some sort. Straws tend to be magical viewed like that. Designers are inquisitive people, and make the most of a material's properties (usually). Nobody can lay claim to the use of straws, or the laws of optics.
Sometimes design is about emergence. In laymans terms... discovering the Americas from east and west is the analogy (we still qualify for discovering America, even though the existing tribes did so thousands of years back).
Ohh btw, isn't it that this is a different thing all together. If not mistaken, it is a room divider, not an isntallation for Hermes, or art.
And one final note for the brave ones casting the first stone (especially Niels). Where were your loud voice when Toqujin Yushioka did his version? Was he copying Tara Donovan? Did she copy him? Or are you afraid to throw stones to mountains?
Mate... keep on trying and only your track record can prove who you are as a designer. For the moment rest assured you make lines somewhere. At least that. Lets hope your judges do too!
