ben mickus is a brooklyn based designer and architect who not only designs furniture, but also works for
new york architecture studio diller scofidio + renfro. mickus has designed a number of pieces under the
name mickus projects since founding the studio in 2006. 'relief chair' is his most recognizable design, using
layers of felt aligned together and cut out into a chair form. the chair is part of mickus' solid/surface/series
collection, which uses digital fabrication and renewable materials. the relief chair's form standout because it
doesn't have the many top layers commonly found on upholstered chairs. instead, mickus designed it so the
cascading edges create a visual and tactile pattern that provides cushion as well. 'floor perch' is a similar
design applying the multi-layered felt design to an ottoman. the ottoman is outfitted with aluminum inserts
that provide structure and create spaces for storage.
