under the supervision of alex padwa and david spectre, students at the shenkar college
of engineering and design, ramat gan were encouraged to look closely at the various
daily coffee rituals and consumptions for their coffee culture project. here are a few
images of the works they developed.

c8-h10- n4-o2 glass coffee cups consist of inner structures that are influenced by
molecule shapes, liquids, geometrical shapes and more. when the coffee is poured
into the glass a contrast between the translucent exterior and coffee is visible.

espresso and cappuccino cups by lee casper
the cups stay in exact standard size and with minor but significant change in shape
the cup becomes an integrative instrument fusing with the hand due to the cups upper
edge slanted supportive area.

the mug is cubic and has an inner cylindrical shape. the square shape also assists
in isolating the heat.

Quite refreshing concepts, while so many designs are already thought of and produced. I like especially the c8-h10-n4-o2 concept. Really beautiful and interesting.

Very interesting and refreshing designs, I really enjoyed browsing through them. Thank you for putting this up.
However practically speaking I have to wonder about these two:
- The c8- h10- n4- o2 cups: I wonder if they will be easy to wash. Remains of coffee might gather within the hard-to-reach nooks and is definitely not very hygenic, especially in the long run.
- The sugar: I understand that we sometimes can be very hectic and it's good to take our time and smell the roses, but wouldn't the coffee be cold by then?

Seems like designs for people who a) like design more than they like hot beverages and b) like design better than they like practicality. They seem mostly spilly, breaky, hard to hold, impractical to store, perfect for obsessive-compulsive single people. Pretty, but good design should also be stable, practical, functional.

yeep,it's funny. They give me different geeling of coffee and make coffee more creative,i like it~~

I come from an 'if it ain't broke' design and engineering background. These are mostly cute, and mostly impractical.
Form should follow function.
If these are decorations, "bravo", job well done.
If one is expected to drink coffee from them, someone ought to have researched what is lacking in the present form of cup, and solved those problems along the way to 'interesting', in my opinion.

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy these and if so where from?
Daniel 07.08.09
really cool stuff

There are some great ideas here, but I agree with drktk, that they are mostly impractical. If this was just an exercise to explore process, than great, but if they think these are suitable for mass production, think again. There are original designs that actually function better than plain mugs while being visually interesting, e.g.:

TEA = TIME 07.16.09
morning coffee is my only consistent - and favorite - ritual. These are fantastic designs for enriching the habit of drinking coffee and for elevating a normal and often hurried necessity to something more intentional and meaningful.
They would have been fantastic for the 'ceramics for breakfast' competition in 2006/2007!
